UPMC Hillman opens $6M center to study microbiome’s link to cancer

Pittsburgh-based UPMC Hillman Cancer Center has opened the Mario Lemieux Microbiome Innovation Center, to study the microbiome’s role in cancer prevention, treatment response and patient outcomes.

The center  was established with a $5 million gift from the Mario Lemieux Foundation, with UPMC contributing another $1 million, according to an Oct. 1 news release. 

The center will give UPMC Hillman and University of Pittsburgh researchers shared resources, including microbiome biobanking and AI-enabled analytics, John Byrd, MD, director of UPMC Hillman, said in the release.
