Philadelphia-based Penn Medicine’s Abramson Cancer Center has launched a phase 1 clinical trial to study FLASH proton therapy in patients with recurrent, unresectable head and neck cancer.
The trial will enroll 10 patients and will be conducted at the Roberts Proton Therapy Center inside the Perelman Center for Advanced Medicine, according to a Sept. 1 news release from Penn Medicine.
FLASH protocol requires five treatments over about 10 days, compared with a typical radiation therapy regimen, which can require daily treatments over five to six weeks.
The study will be the first time a U.S. facility is testing FLASH proton therapy for human patients, the release said.
