Jackson-based University of Mississippi Medical Center has broken ground on construction of a new facility for its Cancer Center and Research Institute.

The future institute will house patient care, clinical trials, research laboratories, supportive services and specialized training under one roof, according to an Oct. 22 news release from the university.

The project is being funded through a $125 million philanthropic campaign, which has raised more than 80% of its goal, the release said.

The institute is part of the University of Mississippi Medical Center’s long-term goal of becoming the first organization in Mississippi to earn a National Cancer Institute designation.

At the Becker's Perioperative Summit, taking place September 14–15 in Chicago, perioperative leaders and healthcare executives will focus on improving operating room efficiency, enhancing patient safety, optimizing staffing and driving innovation across surgical services.
