Kansas City-based University of Kansas Cancer Center has established a research program to study the link between obesity, metabolic health and cancer.

KU Cancer Center’s Obesity, Metabolic Health and Cancer Research Program will develop exercise, nutrition and pharmacological interventions to break the cancer-obesity link, according to a Feb. 24 news release from the university.

The program is the first of its kind at any National Cancer Institute-designated cancer center, the release said. It will be co-led by Kristy Brown, PhD, associate professor of cell biology and physiology, and John Jakicic, PhD, professor of physical activity and weight management.

Researchers at KU Cancer Center are investigating the effects of weight loss drugs on breast cancer risk, and how high blood sugar and insulin resistance may affect tumor growth, among other projects.
